Marathon finally has a PvE mode, and it is better than it has any right to be. Vault Breaker arrived with Update 1.1.5 on July 21 as an “experimental” event running through August 4, and after a week of runs, it feels less like an experiment and more like a preview of the game Marathon could become.

What Vault Breaker actually is
It is a roguelite loop inside Cryo Archive, Marathon’s endgame zone. You queue with a special Sponsored Kit — solo, duo, or trio, at any Runner Level — and push through progressively tougher vaults toward a final vault and, in Bungie’s words, “the mysterious entity within.” Gear you find stays behind when you exfil. The exception is Vault Data, a currency you extract to upgrade your Sponsored Kit or spend in the Vault Breaker Armory on weapons and items you can take into normal runs.
That last detail is clever: you get to experience Cryo Archive without Bungie flooding the game economy with low-risk Cryo loot.
Why it matters
Marathon’s biggest problem has always been its walls. The PvP loop is merciless — IGN’s review called the playerbase “violent goblins” with affection, but plenty of players bounced off exactly that. Cryo Archive itself gated its raid-style content behind steep requirements; even Shroud called it “too elaborate” for casual players. Vault Breaker is the first time Bungie has offered the atmosphere and loot tension without another team hunting you.
The removal of PvP pressure changes how the mode feels, not how hard it is. Vault AI hits harder the deeper you go, and the roguelite progression — growing stronger across multiple runs — gives failed attempts a purpose.
The catch
It is temporary. Vault Breaker closes August 4, with the full PvE mode not arriving until Season 3 on September 22. Bungie says it is gathering feedback and data before then — so if you want the final version to respect your time, play it now and tell them what worked.
Worth your time?
Yes, unreservedly.
